Mini bio
How it started.
In March 2020, while teaching at the University of Texas, Katelyn began sending pandemic updates to faculty, staff, and students. A student asked her to put the emails on Facebook so they could be shared with family and friends. Those updates became Your Local Epidemiologist.
Finding her audience.
The newsletter grew around a clear purpose: making complicated public health research understandable and useful. It expanded beyond COVID-19 into nutrition, emerging research, health rumors, and other questions readers encounter in daily life.
Beyond the inbox.
Katelyn is now YLE’s founder and CEO, an adjunct professor at Yale School of Public Health, and a co-founder of Healthier Together. She previously advised the White House and CDC. At Yale, she co-teaches public health communication with Naria Halliwell, helping students turn research into messages for real audiences.
Going local.
Her team has extended YLE into regional newsletters. In October 2026, she announced that its New York coverage would expand to the Northeast, following the addition of a California edition in 2025.
