Mini bio

Songs learned at home.

Born in Barmer, Rajasthan, and later based in Pakistan, Mai Dhai grew up in the Manganiar musical tradition. Her mother, folk singer Khand Bai, taught her a repertoire of Marwari songs. As a child, she accompanied her mother to weddings and learned the melodies and words by listening.

From Lahooti to Coke Studio.

Saif Samejo and The Sketches helped introduce her to new listeners through Lahooti Live Sessions. In 2015 she performed in the United States, including SXSW, and reached a national television audience on Coke Studio Season 8. Her duets paired her with Karam Abbas on Aankharli Pharookai and Atif Aslam on Kadi Aao Ni.

New settings for familiar traditions.

Her collaborations include the Ho Mann Jahaan soundtrack song Sarak Sarak and Kesaria with Natasha Baig. For the 2025 EP Thar Ro Prem, she worked with Ustad Ameer Ali, her son Ahsan Ali on dholak, and percussionist Joshua Amjad. Her official release notes describe a live, single-take recording at Gangwar Studios.
