Mini bio
How it started.
Matt grew up in Oyster Bay in Sydney’s south, singing in church and learning guitar. At 16, he entered Australian Idol and finished runner-up in 2007. He later moved to London and connected with Communion, developing his songwriting through a run of early EPs.
Finding a voice.
The 2011 EP Into the Flame brought the breakthrough song “Brother”. It won ARIA Song of the Year in 2012, followed by “Resolution” in 2013. Debut album Telluric reached number one in Australia in 2016.
Building Rainbow Valley.
His second album, Rainbow Valley, arrived in 2018 with Matt playing and singing every part. Its blend of soul and psychedelia won triple j’s Australian Album of the Year at the 2019 J Awards. Everything’s Fine followed in 2023.
Where the music is now.
Tragic Magic arrived in April 2026. Matt initially considered making an instrumental record, then found that writing sessions with close collaborators had produced an album of songs. He played nearly all its instruments, with family life and loss shaping the writing. Alongside his own records, he works with other artists as a producer and collaborator.
