Mini bio
How it started.
As a child in Saarland, Matthias wanted to be a pilot. He went into materials science, earned a doctorate in 2004 and later saw ESA’s astronaut recruitment call on television. He joined the astronaut corps in 2015 and graduated from training in 2018.
Life in orbit.
Cosmic Kiss took him to the ISS aboard SpaceX Crew-3 in November 2021. He supported more than 35 European experiments and made his first spacewalk before returning in May 2022.
Bringing space home.
He tells that story in Cosmic Kiss and his WAS IST WAS books. With Sarah Konrad and Noa Sauer, he turns experiences from the ISS and astronaut training into illustrated nonfiction for young readers.
