Mini bio

How it started.

Michael grew up in Stilwell, Kansas, and studied psychology and English literature at the University of Chicago. College theater and video editing gave him a way into making things online. An early mashup paired Friday the 13th audio with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off footage and found an audience on CollegeHumor.

Finding Vsauce.

He created Vsauce in 2010 as a video game comedy channel. It evolved toward science and puzzling everyday questions, including “Why Are Things Creepy?” His approach turns an odd question into a path through research, ideas and unexpected connections.

Taking curiosity further.

Michael produced and hosted three seasons of the YouTube Original series Mind Field. In its first episode, Isolation, he spent three days in a windowless, soundproof chamber to explore what happens without outside stimulation.

Beyond the channel.

He co-created Brain Candy Live with Adam Savage, taking science onto stages in the US, Canada and Australia, and co-founded The Curiosity Box, a subscription of science and mathematics toys. In 2025, he teamed up with Hannah Fry for The Rest Is Science.
