Mini bio

How it started.

Born in Senegal and brought to Berlin as a baby, Oumi studied industrial design and worked on eyewear. A roller disco at Huxleys sparked a love of skating. After an initial spell of lessons, money was tight, so they kept learning through videos from the US.

The breakthrough.

In 2020, a video of Oumi dancing in a yellow outfit at Tempelhofer Feld travelled far beyond Berlin. The skate school already existed before that moment. Oumi later told rbb24 that the attention helped it grow and opened up paid creative collaborations.

Beyond the feed.

Jam Skate Club brings together lessons, roller discos and performance work. Oumi’s practice connects choreography and music with the Black American roots of rhythm skating. Recent work has placed particular emphasis on helping children and young people access movement and alternative sports.

Fashion and teaching.

Oumi’s skating has also led to fashion work, including Bottega Veneta’s Wardrobe 02 campaign in 2021. That year they appeared as a roller-skating trainer on Germany’s Next Topmodel.
