Mini bio

How it started.

Rachel grew up in Seattle and began publishing her blog in 2020. Her writing draws on her own experience of an eating disorder, depression, therapy, and recovery. She wanted to make those experiences easier to talk about and help readers feel less alone.

Finding her voice.

In her interview with The Emily Program, Rachel describes how group therapy helped loosen the shame she felt about her eating disorder. She began sharing her story online and at awareness walks. Reading Glennon Doyle’s Love Warrior encouraged her to consider a memoir, and a divorce during the pandemic gave her the push to write it.

Books and community.

Her memoir Where the River Flows arrived in 2021, followed by the writing workbook Write to Heal in 2022. Her work also includes guided journals and workshops on writing and inner child work. By 2023, her author biography described a community of more than 300,000 across social media and a completed master’s degree in psychology.

The messy middle.

Rachel started The Messy Middle on Substack in 2022 and announced a new visual and editorial direction in February 2026. Her 2025 book Look Up gathers poems and short notes for periods of uncertainty and change. In June 2026, she shared that she had moved to Los Angeles and was working full time for Airbnb while continuing to write.
