Mini bio

How it started.

Rizwan and Muazzam grew up in a Pakistani family of qawwali singers. Their father, Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan, initially wanted them to concentrate on school. After a school music competition win and an invitation to sing at a Sufi shrine, he heard them perform and began teaching them. Their uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also mentored them.

Finding their audience.

Their performance at WOMAD in Reading in July 1998 introduced the young ensemble to UK listeners. Attish: The Hidden Fire arrived that year, followed by Sacrifice to Love in 1999, produced by John Leckie. A Better Destiny and Day of Colours helped build a catalogue rooted in devotional singing and poetry.

Carrying the music forward.

Their performances build through repeated phrases, answering voices, handclaps, harmonium and tabla. They sing in Farsi, Urdu and Punjabi, drawing on the qawwali tradition’s use of romantic language for spiritual love. In 2025 they released At the Feet of the Beloved, followed by an autumn UK tour and performances in Singapore and Scandinavia in 2026.
