Mini bio
How it started.
The trio formed in 2010 through a circle of Sydney friends. James Hunt and Tyrone Lindqvist knew each other from high school; Jon George was the older brother of a friend. In an early interview, the band traced their first song, We Left, to a rainy night in Byron Bay and a shared love of Trentemøller. They released an EP online, and support from triple j helped bring people to their shows.
From Atlas to Innerbloom.
Their debut album Atlas went to No. 1 in Australia in 2013. For Bloom, they moved to Berlin in 2014 and absorbed the city’s dance music culture. Released in 2016, the album included You Were Right and Innerbloom, a song Jon George described as especially rewarding for the personal stories fans attached to it.
Songs built to be played live.
Their shows bring vocals, guitar, drums and synthesizers into a three-piece band performance. Solace followed in 2018, and their 2020 Live from Joshua Tree film placed that setup in the desert, directed by Alexander George. Surrender arrived in 2021, with Alive later winning their first Grammy.
Making room to reconnect.
While writing Surrender, they built healthier routines and worked on relationships within the band. Inhale / Exhale followed in 2024 as their fifth studio album. Its next chapter brought two remix collections in 2025 and a world tour whose final full-length headline show took place in Toronto in September 2026.

Trivia
- They originally used the name RÜFÜS. The longer name first distinguished them from the American funk band Rufus, and they adopted it worldwide in 2018.
- While making Bloom, they used hallway ping-pong sessions to clear their heads. Tyrone wrote the chords to Say a Prayer for Me while Jon and James were playing.
- They bought a piano for Surrender so they could test songs with just piano and vocals.
