Mini bio

Music at home.

Shafqat grew up in Lahore in the Patiala gharana musical family. His father was classical singer Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, and his older brother was singer Asad Amanat Ali Khan. In a 2013 interview, he said music surrounded him as a child and becoming a singer was his own dream.

Finding his voice.

He became widely known as Fuzön’s lead vocalist, bringing classical phrasing into the band’s pop and rock sound. Their album Saagar included Khamaj and Aankhon Ke Saagar. After leaving the band in 2006, he continued as a solo artist and playback singer. Mitwa, for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, became his major Hindi film breakthrough that year.

Songs across borders.

His solo debut Tabeer arrived in 2008, followed by film work including Tere Naina for My Name Is Khan. He continues to write and compose as well as sing: Meharma credits him for all three, while his Pehli Si Mohabbat video pairs his composition and vocals with an appearance by Resham.

Inside the process.

In his Fifteen Questions interview, Shafqat describes composition as an intuitive process. A melody can lead to words, or poetry can suggest a tune. He also takes part in mixing and mastering his own compositions, listening for which details need to come forward.
