Mini bio

How it started.

Raised in West Virginia, Jakes preached his first sermon in 1976 and was ordained in 1979. He began with a small storefront congregation in Montgomery and worked at Union Carbide to help keep his ministry going.

The message that traveled.

Woman, Thou Art Loosed! grew from his preaching into a 1993 book about women’s healing and freedom. Television broadcasts on TBN and BET helped bring his ministry to a national audience in the 1990s.

Building a home in Dallas.

In 1996, Jakes moved to Dallas and founded The Potter’s House. Its first service drew more than 2,000 people. His work expanded into books, gospel recordings, and film production, including Miracles from Heaven.

His next chapter.

In 2025, Sarah Jakes Roberts and Touré Roberts became The Potter’s House’s co-senior pastors. Jakes remained its founding pastor and spiritual overseer, and launched The Open Book newsletter and the iHeart podcast NXT Chapter, opening with an Oprah Winfrey interview.
