How it started.
Patch launched TierZoo in July 2017, two months after graduating from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a microbiology degree. He spent about a year working as a food scientist while making videos on the side, then moved into TierZoo full time.
Finding his audience.
In his 2019 AMA, Patch said TierZoo was his fourth YouTube channel. Earlier attempts gave him editing experience; sharing his first TierZoo video with Reddit’s r/outside helped it go viral. He reported reaching a million subscribers in 15 months.
The idea behind the rankings.
His aim is to get gamers interested in zoology. Animal abilities, survival strategies and evolution become the mechanics of a game fans can follow. He credits the Super Smash Bros. community with introducing him to tier lists.
Beyond the main channel.
His work includes a PBS Eons collaboration about male mammoths and a Nebula remaster of his original shark ranking. TierZoo won the Learning and Education category at the 2023 Streamy Awards.
