Mini bio

How it started.

Wolters World began in 2009. Mark traces the idea to a disappointing Italian town that a guidebook had made sound wonderful. The gap between the description and the visit convinced Mark to give travelers a balanced account of a destination’s pleasures and frustrations.

Finding the audience.

Early uploads included language lessons. Mark told IdeaMensch that the channel’s analytics revealed a stronger appetite for cultural advice and what visitors should avoid doing. Following that interest helped the channel grow into its familiar mix of do’s and don’ts, culture shocks, and things to love and hate.

A family perspective.

Jocelyn is Wolters World’s chief creative officer, with a background in architectural history and historic preservation. Together with Caleb and Liam, the family shares lessons from living abroad and traveling together, including the mistakes that make the next trip easier.

Teaching in two places.

Mark also teaches marketing at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The same interest in helping people learn runs through the classroom and the travel channel. Fans can start with the long-running destination guides, then follow newer videos and interviews for more stories from the road.
