Mini bio

How it started.

Ali began with Lahore band Jupiters in 1986, playing pop and rock covers at small gigs. He wrote Dosti during that period and later recorded it with Junoon. He became Junoon’s lead singer in 1990.

The Junoon years.

With Junoon, Ali helped bring rock guitars and South Asian Sufi music together. Sayonee, from the 1997 album Azadi, became a defining breakthrough. The band won Best International Group at the 1998 Channel V Awards and performed at the United Nations General Assembly in 2001.

His own sound.

His first solo album, Social Circus, arrived in 2005, followed by Klashinfolk in 2008. Film singing and Coke Studio expanded the journey, including Garaj Baras with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Man Kunto Maula with Javed Bashir and Ghoom Charakhra with Abida Parveen.

Still making music.

In his April 2026 H! Pakistan interview, Ali described wanting his current music to move beyond Junoon’s sound. His solo releases that year include Jaaniya and Yahan Wahan, while live performances continue to bring him back to familiar songs.
