Mini bio

How it started.

Ari grew up in San Diego with a deep affection for his elders. His grandmother Bluma, a librarian and his best friend, encouraged his creativity. After her death in 2008, he moved to New York and began photographing and interviewing stylish older people on the streets. Advanced Style grew out of that search for connection.

From the sidewalk to the bookshelf.

The blog became a book in 2012 and a documentary in 2014. Directed by Lina Plioplyte and produced and co-written by Ari, the film follows seven New Yorkers whose personal style challenges familiar ideas about aging. His photography also reached fashion campaigns, including Karen Walker’s summer 2013 eyewear campaign and work for Coach.

Style, love and companionship.

Older & Wiser expanded the portraits to cities around the world and included older men. Advanced Love turned toward couples and their stories of lasting companionship. In Advanced Pets, he explored the bonds between his muses and their animals. The same interest in connection runs through Advanced Friendship, presented with Judith Boyd at Art Athina in 2025.

Before Advanced Style, Ari worked in fashion production and retail management.
He told PRINT in 2024 that he is vegan and has had dogs since he was a little boy.
His 2012 book includes an introduction by Maira Kalman and a contribution by Dita Von Teese.
Asked for a fashion mantra in his 2024 FHCM interview, he answered: “Shop Your Closets.”
