Mini bio
How it started.
Aswath earned an MBA and a finance PhD at UCLA. Before joining NYU Stern in 1986, they taught as a visiting lecturer at UC Berkeley from 1984 to 1986.
A teacher first.
Teaching brought early recognition: Berkeley’s Earl Cheit award in 1985 and NYU’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990. A 1994 Business Week profile placed Aswath among twelve leading US business school professors.
Opening the classroom.
Damodaran Online has been on the web since 1998. Aswath maintains the site personally and keeps almost all of it open. The free classes, data, spreadsheets, and blog give curious readers a way to work through valuation for themselves.
Stories meet numbers.
Narrative and Numbers connects business storytelling with financial models. The Corporate Life Cycle follows businesses through growth and decline. In March 2026, Aswath also refreshed the free Investment Philosophies course while preparing the book’s third edition.
