Mini bio

How it started.

Before her books and podcast, Mel worked as a public defender in New York City. She says that at 41 she was unemployed, in debt and struggling to get out of bed. The countdown she calls the 5 Second Rule helped her begin taking small steps again.

The talk that traveled.

Her 2011 TEDxSF talk, How to stop screwing yourself over, introduced that approach to a wider audience. On her own podcast, she later described it as the first official speech she had ever given. The 5 Second Rule book followed in 2017, then The High 5 Habit in 2021.

The Mel Robbins Podcast launched in 2022 with personal stories and conversations about making changes in everyday life. Her 2024 book The Let Them Theory, written with her daughter Sawyer, focuses on releasing the effort to control other people. She has since brought the book’s ideas to live audiences on The Let Them Tour.
