Mini bio
How it started.
Richard began with Student magazine as a teenager, giving young people a place to share their ideas. A mail-order record business followed in 1970. When a postal strike threatened that business, the team opened a record shop above a shoe shop on London’s Oxford Street.
The music breakthrough.
At The Manor recording studio, Richard heard a demo by Mike Oldfield. After other labels turned it down, the team created their own label to release Tubular Bells. Virgin Records went on to work with artists including the Sex Pistols, Culture Club and the Rolling Stones.
Beyond records.
Virgin Atlantic launched in 1984, extending his interest in customer experience into flying. He founded Virgin Unite in 2004, and in 2021 flew aboard VSS Unity on Virgin Galactic’s first fully crewed spaceflight.
The stories he shares.
His books, blog and videos bring together business lessons and personal adventures. The four-part HBO documentary Branson follows his life ahead of his 2021 spaceflight. In 2024 he narrated a revised combined edition of his two autobiographies, Losing and Finding My Virginity.
