Mini bio

How it started.

Ben studied engineering before an MBA brought him into finance. On Money Scope, he recalled feeling uneasy about the conflicts of interest he saw during an internship at a mutual fund dealership. Discovering academic research on investing and household finance gave him a reason to stay. He began blogging about financial decisions in 2012, and says that blog helped convince Cameron Passmore to hire him at PWL in 2013.

From a blog to a microphone.

Common Sense Investing arrived in 2017 with a clear promise: answer ordinary money questions using academic research, data and logic. In 2018, Ben and Cameron started Rational Reminder, pairing investment discussions with longer conversations about financial decisions. By November 2026, PWL described Ben’s YouTube audience as well over half a million subscribers.

A wider curriculum.

In 2023, Ben teamed up with physician and Loonie Doctor blogger Mark Soth for Money Scope, a personal finance curriculum for Canadian professionals. The project grew out of their overlapping research and a proposed return visit by Soth to Rational Reminder. Its episodes combine audio and video with indexed transcripts and references.

Still asking what the evidence says.

Alongside his public education work, Ben became PWL’s president in November 2026 while continuing as chief investment officer. His recent work includes an essay in How I Invest My Money Volume Two and a video explaining his own financial choices.
