Mini bio
How it started.
Cal signed his first book deal with Random House soon after turning 21, while studying at Dartmouth. His early books offered advice for students. In 2007 he started Study Hacks, the blog that became a long-running home for his essays on learning, attention, and meaningful work.
Finding his subject.
So Good They Can’t Ignore You, published in 2012, challenged the advice to follow your passion. Deep Work followed in 2016 and brought his thinking about concentration to a much wider readership. In a 2026 retrospective, Cal said the book had sold more than two million copies in over 45 languages.
Beyond the inbox.
Digital Minimalism and A World Without Email extended those questions into personal technology habits and workplace communication. Slow Productivity, published in 2024, asks how people can do meaningful work without burning out. Alongside the books, Cal teaches computer science at Georgetown and became a contributing writer for The New Yorker in 2021.
A place for questions.
Cal launched Deep Questions in 2020, answering readers’ questions and sharing case studies about living and working deeply. He began publishing podcast videos on YouTube in 2022. His forthcoming book, The Deep Life: A Structured Approach, is scheduled for March 2, 2027 and explores how to build a more intentional everyday life.

Trivia
- He carries a pocket-sized notebook and used it to capture a new book idea during a hike to Lonesome Lake.
- His home study has no permanent electronics, a deliberate choice he described in his 2026 Reddit AMA.
- Readers send him articles, books, and case studies through a dedicated interesting-links email address; many ideas in his writing begin there.
