Before MKBHD became a studio, Marques was a high school student researching a first laptop. Other people’s videos helped them choose, so they made videos of their own to help the next person. They began posting tech videos in 2009, starting with simple software screencasts and tutorials.
Finding an audience.
The channel grew over years and hundreds of uploads. Google executive Vic Gundotra publicly praised their reviewing in 2013, and a 2014 scratch test of a rumored iPhone 6 sapphire display brought wider press attention. After graduating from Stevens in 2015, Marques made the channel their full-time work.
More ways to talk tech.
In 2019, Marques expanded into the Waveform podcast and hosted Retro Tech, exploring the devices that shaped everyday life. The wider channel family now includes The Studio for behind-the-scenes videos and Auto Focus for cars. In a September 2025 interview, Marques described a team of about 17 people, while keeping writing, reviewing and appearing on camera at the center of their own work.
Away from the review desk.
Marques also plays ultimate. Their USA Ultimate biography lists world titles in 2022 and 2024, and they appear on the official gold-medal roster for the 2025 World Games. Product design has become another part of their work, including the Atoms M251 sneaker and a chief creative partner role at Ridge.
