Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Pretoria, Musk became interested in programming as a child and sold a game called Blastar at twelve. He moved to Canada in 1989 and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania. His early businesses were rooted in the internet: Zip2 offered maps and business directories, while X.com became part of the company known as PayPal.
From software to hardware.
Compaq acquired Zip2 in 1999, and eBay acquired PayPal in 2002. Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, joined Tesla's board in 2004 and became its CEO in 2008. His public work grew to include electric vehicles, batteries, reusable rockets and spacecraft.
The projects fans follow.
Tesla's Roadster debuted in 2008 and Model S followed in 2012. SpaceX reached orbit with Falcon 1 in 2008 and re-flew a Falcon 9 rocket and a Dragon spacecraft in 2017. Musk also helped start Neuralink and The Boring Company, extending his interests into brain-computer interfaces and tunneling.
A very public working life.
Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and renamed it X in 2023. He uses his own account for updates and commentary. His work now also includes AI through xAI, which joined SpaceX in February 2026. A brief role in the Trump administration in 2025 brought his political activity alongside his technology work into public view.
