Mini bio

How it started.

Growing up in Groeningen, Carlijn bought a camera at 14 and began photographing flowers in the garden. A friend made dresses, and the pair staged shoots around farms. Photoshop let Carlijn move those pictures into imaginary settings, turning a village pastime into a way to escape.

Finding a direction.

At Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Carlijn studied Lifestyle & Design and found a direction through photography classes. Their own early biography records a 2014 graduation with honours. In 2016, their work appeared at Foam 3h alongside Elizaveta Porodina and Philippe Vogelenzang during the museum’s Helmut Newton retrospective.

The images you may recognise.

Carlijn photographed Beyoncé’s Renaissance album cover in 2022. Their work also moves between fashion editorials, campaigns and books, with surrealism, costume and transformation recurring throughout. Mannequins, made with James Chester, came out in 2021; Eyes and Sleeping Beauty followed in 2023.

Building a world.

For Sleeping Beauty at Foam, Carlijn invited designer Sabine Marcelis to reshape the exhibition space around the photographs. More recent projects include the childhood-inspired book Making Faces and Autoportrait at Acne Paper Palais Royal, both in 2026.
