Mini bio

How it started.

After studying at Cambridge and serving in the Royal Navy, David Attenborough worked in publishing before joining the BBC as a trainee producer in 1952. Zoo Quest, launched in 1954, took him overseas to film wildlife and made travel and natural history central to his television work.

From the office to the field.

He became controller of BBC Two in 1965, helping introduce colour television to Britain, and later directed BBC television programmes. In 1973 he returned to programme making. He wrote and presented Life on Earth in 1979, followed by The Living Planet and The Trials of Life.

A voice across generations.

His later narration includes Planet Earth, Blue Planet II and Netflix’s Our Planet. A Life on Our Planet brought his own experiences into a film about environmental change. He continues to connect wildlife stories with conservation through work including Ocean, Secret Garden and A Gorilla Story.
