Mini bio
How it started.
Ben began in physics, completing a PhD in nanophotonics at the University of Bristol. He then joined Ziylo, a university spinout working on smart insulin. Seeing a discovery become a business shaped his interest in helping other scientists take their work beyond the lab.
Building alongside explaining.
He founded Spin Up Science in 2018 to teach scientists commercial skills. His work expanded into venture building and investment through Empirical Ventures. He says the channel grew alongside those projects from curiosity about new ideas and a desire to share them.
A way into difficult ideas.
On YouTube, Ben tells the stories behind scientific discoveries and the people making them. His 2022 video about quantum entanglement and the Nobel Prize in Physics became a standout, reaching more than nine million views. His later work ranges from fusion and batteries to biotechnology, mixing explainers with visits to research teams.
