Mini bio
How it started.
Baron learned about typography and layouts from his father, a newspaper art director. After studying at the École des Arts Appliqués, he moved to New York in 1982 and went on to work for Barneys.
The magazine years.
In 1988, he redesigned Vogue Italia with Franca Sozzani. He founded Baron & Baron in 1990, then helped relaunch Harper’s Bazaar with Liz Tilberis in 1992. That same year, Calvin Klein hired him as creative director and he art directed Madonna’s Sex book. He later brought his eye to Vogue Paris and Interview.
Beyond the page.
His work extends from CK One’s bottle and advertising to furniture, film and landscape photography. Liquid Light 1983-2003 gathers two decades of coastal photographs. His 2019 Phaidon retrospective brings these different parts of his practice together, with text by Adam Gopnik and a foreword by Kate Moss.
Still making things.
In his March 2025 Family Style interview, Baron described working between Paris and New York while preparing five books of personal artwork. Campaigns for Zara, Gucci and Pandora continued alongside those projects.

- His father worked as an art director for French newspapers, giving him an early introduction to typography and page layouts.
- He described Instagram as a journal in images in a 2014 TIME interview, saying he took its photographs on an iPhone and posted them in the moment.
