Mini bio
How it started.
Quincy Larson had been a teacher and school director before learning to code at 31 and working as a software engineer. In 2014, he founded freeCodeCamp to help other busy adults learn programming and move into tech careers. He wrote its first few hundred lines in a closet in his San Francisco apartment.
A community takes shape.
The project grew through people teaching, contributing code, leading study groups, and helping fellow learners. By 2018, freeCodeCamp described a global community of millions of developers. Its YouTube channel and publication gave learners more ways to study alongside the interactive curriculum.
Learning together.
In 2020, the community began localizing its curriculum, tutorials, and video courses into more languages. By its tenth anniversary in October 2024, freeCodeCamp reported more than 1,000 free full-length YouTube courses and 10 million subscribers. Its courses, projects, and certifications remain free.
What they are building now.
Recent work includes new Python, JavaScript, and database certifications, courses on AI security and search, and a documentary about builders at a Hong Kong hackathon. In August 2026, the team announced that all six core certification tracks were available, following the backend certification launch.
