Mini bio

How it started.

Garry began making webpages and programming databases as a teenager, finding clients in the Yellow Pages. In an interview with The Hustle, he recalled helping his family with a house down payment through that work. He later studied computer systems engineering at Stanford and worked as an early designer and engineering manager at Palantir.

From builder to backer.

He co-founded Posterous, the blogging platform that joined YC’s Summer 2008 batch and was later acquired by Twitter. As a YC partner from 2011 to 2015, he built Bookface and the Demo Day website. He also co-founded Initialized Capital, with early investments including Coinbase and Instacart, before returning to lead YC in January 2023.

Why he shares.

His videos bring together practical startup advice and conversations about the people doing the building. He told The Hustle that sharing his own mistakes was part of the point. Fans can also find him on YC’s Lightcone podcast, discussing AI and startups with fellow partners.

Still making things.

In 2026, Garry shared GStack, his open-source AI coding setup, and GBrain, his system for giving agents personal context. His Startup School talk connects those tools to a question he keeps returning to: how can people own the knowledge and workflows they build with AI?
