Mini bio

How it started.

Haroon grew up in Panjpir in Swabi and began singing while still at school. At Edwardes College in Peshawar, the music club gave him space to learn tabla and harmonium. His first album, Da Rangoono Makhaam, arrived in 1996, followed by Ghunchakoona.

The songs that travelled.

Awal Ba Kala Kala Gham Wo became one of his signature songs. His work moves between the short folk verses of tappa and light ghazals, with Pashto poetry at its centre. Stergey Ghazal is another of his best-known recordings.

Music across borders.

After Taliban threats forced him to leave Pakistan in 2008, Haroon sought refuge in the United States and continued making music abroad. He also became a broadcaster, and RFE/RL lists him as a Radio Mashaal journalist in Prague. His recent releases keep that connection to poetry alive, including the refugee dedication Azaar and a live performance of Janan Watana from San Francisco.
