How it started.
In 1978, Ina was writing nuclear energy budgets at the White House Office of Management and Budget. A New York Times ad for a Hamptons specialty food store sent her and Jeffrey on a drive to Long Island. She bought Barefoot Contessa with no food-business experience.
From shop to screen.
After selling the store in 1996, she worked on a cookbook in an office above it. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook became a bestseller in 1999, and she began filming Barefoot Contessa for Food Network in 2002.

Be My Guest began in 2022, pairing cooking with conversations at her East Hampton home. Her 2024 memoir, Be Ready When the Luck Happens, follows the personal story behind that career. In 2026 she added Simply Ina and Happy Hour, a video podcast filmed in her New York City apartment.
