Mini bio

How it started.

Jane dreamed of studying animals in Africa and saved for a trip to Kenya. There she met Louis Leakey, who became her mentor. On July 14, 1960, she began observing wild chimpanzees at Gombe in what is now Tanzania.

The breakthrough.

Her observations of chimpanzees making and using tools challenged a distinction people had drawn between humans and other animals. A National Geographic cover story in 1963 and the 1965 television film Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees brought her work to a wider audience.

From research to action.

She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977. A 1986 chimpanzee conference sharpened her focus on conservation, and Roots & Shoots followed in 1991 to help young people act for people, animals and their environment.

Jane the storyteller.

Her books invited readers into the lives of the Gombe chimpanzees and explored how people can keep hope alive. She also reached fans through documentaries and the Hopecast. Jane died in October 2025; her institute continues her work.
