Mini bio

Growing up with wildlife.

Born on 24 July 1998 to Steve and Terri Irwin, Bindi grew up at Australia Zoo alongside the animals her family cared for. Her first television appearances were on The Crocodile Hunter, before she became a wildlife presenter in her own right.

Finding her own audience.

Bindi: The Jungle Girl put her curiosity about animals at the centre of a children’s wildlife series. In 2008, she won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series and the Logie for Most Popular New Female Talent. She later won season 21 of Dancing with the Stars with Derek Hough in 2015.

Conservation on screen and on the page.

Bindi joined her family in Crikey! It’s the Irwins, bringing viewers into their work with animals. Her books include Creating a Conservation Legacy and the children’s picture book You Are a Wildlife Warrior!, illustrated by Ramona Kaulitzki. She told Science Friday that her daughter Grace helped inspire the picture book.

Life at the zoo.

Bindi works with her family through Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors. She and her husband, Chandler Powell, are raising their daughter Grace around that same conservation work. Alongside her wildlife projects, she has spoken publicly about living with endometriosis and received EndoFound’s 2024 Blossom Award.
