Mini bio
How it started.
Before Amazon, Bezos worked in computer science and finance, including at D. E. Shaw. In his 2010 Princeton address, he recalled being drawn to the rapid growth of the web and the possibility of an online bookstore with a selection no physical shop could match. He left his job and founded Amazon in 1994.
From a garage to a household name.
Amazon opened as an online bookseller in July 1995 from his Bellevue, Washington home. By 1999 it had reached 10 million customer accounts, and TIME named Bezos its Person of the Year. He moved from CEO to executive chair in July 2021.
A personal trip to space.
Bezos founded Blue Origin and later rode on its first human New Shepard flight. On July 20, 2021, he crossed the Kármán Line with his brother Mark, Wally Funk, and Oliver Daemen. The company’s ambitions also include orbital rockets and lunar infrastructure.
