Mini bio
How it started.
Before the cameras, Clarkson worked in local journalism. Penguin’s author biography traces the start of the writing career to the Rotherham Advertiser. A presenting job on the original Top Gear in 1988 brought that voice to television.
The car years.
Clarkson helped shape the 2002 relaunch of Top Gear, becoming closely associated with Richard Hammond and James May through car reviews, challenges and road trips. The BBC did not renew Clarkson’s contract in 2015 after an assault on a producer. The trio returned together on Prime Video with The Grand Tour in 2016; their final travelling special, One for the Road, arrived in September 2024.
A different kind of horsepower.
Clarkson’s Farm began in 2021 and made the daily work at Diddly Squat part of the story, alongside Kaleb Cooper, Lisa Hogan, Charlie Ireland and Gerald Cooper. The farm is in the Cotswolds between Chipping Norton and Chadlington. The series later followed Clarkson into running The Farmer’s Dog pub, while the Diddly Squat books collected more stories from farm life.
Still asking the questions.
Alongside farming and writing, Clarkson took over the revived Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2018. In 2026, Millionaire Hot Seat added a faster quiz format with six contestants rotating through the chair.
