Mini bio
How it started.
Joe came to YouTube through storytelling. A 1998 University of North Texas media arts graduate, he wrote the independent film Ocean Front Property and began making vlog-style videos to promote it. Taking questions from friends on Facebook gave him another way to write, perform and share ideas.
Finding his subject.
After working in filmmaking, comedy and advertising copywriting, Joe committed to a video every Monday in 2014. In a 2020 interview, he recalled that a 2015 answer about aliens and the Fermi Paradox took off. The new viewers asked more science and futurism questions, helping shape Answers With Joe.
Curiosity with company.
Joe describes himself as a science enthusiast. Answers With Joe ranges across science, technology, philosophy, history and mysteries, with guests including Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Cox and Andy Weir. His Conversations With Joe podcast makes room for longer discussions, including an interview with Hank Green.
Beyond the desk.
His 2025 projects brought that curiosity into other formats. The Book of Mysteries revisits channel subjects with extra detail, while Oldest and Newest Places on Earth takes him into the field to explore ancient rocks in Canada and active volcanic landscapes in Hawaii.
