Mini bio
How it started.
Raised in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Jon studied psychology and played varsity soccer at William & Mary. After college, he worked jobs including bartender and busboy before building a stand-up career in New York clubs.
Finding his voice.
An appearance on David Letterman’s show in 1992 helped him reach a wider audience. MTV’s The Jon Stewart Show followed in 1993. In 1999 he took over The Daily Show, making politics and the news media central to his comedy during a run that lasted until 2015.
Beyond the desk.
He made his directing debut with Rosewater, about Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, and later wrote and directed the campaign comedy Irresistible. The Problem With Jon Stewart paired issue-focused television with a companion podcast. He has also campaigned for health care for veterans and 9/11 responders.
Where to find him now.
Jon returned to The Daily Show in February 2024. His separate podcast, The Weekly Show, gives him room for longer interviews with experts, politicians, and advocates. In October 2026, Comedy Central extended his Monday hosting and executive producer roles through December 2028.
