Mini bio

From stars to climate.

Katharine began in physics and astronomy at the University of Toronto. A climate science class changed her direction: she saw how the same physics could help explain a problem that worsens hunger, poverty and injustice. She went on to study atmospheric science at Illinois.

Finding a wider audience.

Her appearance in the climate documentary Years of Living Dangerously and inclusion in the 2014 TIME100 brought her work to a wider public. Books, her TED talk and the PBS series Global Weirding gave her more ways to connect climate science with everyday concerns.

What fans can follow now.

Today she is chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy and a distinguished professor at Texas Tech. Her Talking Climate newsletter pairs good news with difficult news and something readers can do. Her book Saving Us explores how shared values can open conversations and help people act together.
