A dog for the road.
In 2011, photographer Theron Humphrey adopted Maddie from a shelter as he prepared to leave his corporate photography job and travel across the United States. She became his companion while he photographed people and collected their stories.
Standing on things.
Photographs of Maddie balancing on everyday objects began as a playful sideline to the trip. Her patience and unusual poses grew into Maddie on Things, shared through Theron’s @thiswildidea account and published as a book in 2013. The photographs turn bicycles, signs and other ordinary objects into little stages for her.
The quieter photographs.
Maddie Lounging on Things followed in 2017, showing her at rest during their travels. Across both books and the Instagram photographs, the central story is the companionship between Maddie and the person behind the camera.
Remembering Maddie.
Maddie died on July 17, 2025, aged 14. Theron continues to preserve her photographs on his official site, where he describes how a spotted coonhound became the heart of his work.
