Mini bio

How it started.

Marc was making software long before Salesforce. At 14, he sold “How to Juggle” for $75; at 15, he started Liberty Software to make video games. He later spent 13 years at Oracle, becoming its youngest vice president.

Building Salesforce.

In 1999, Marc, Parker Harris, Frank Dominguez, and Dave Moellenhoff began building Salesforce’s customer relationship management software in a rented San Francisco apartment. The company launched publicly in February 2000 with its “The End of Software” theme, making a case for delivering business software over the internet.

Putting the story on paper.

Behind the Cloud, written with Carlye Adler, tells the story of building Salesforce. A decade later, Trailblazer, co-written with Monica Langley, explored how businesses can serve employees, customers, communities, and other stakeholders.

Giving back.

Marc helped build philanthropy into Salesforce through the 1-1-1 model: giving equity, product, and employee time to communities. He and Lynne Benioff also support healthcare and education. Alongside his technology work, he is TIME’s owner and co-chair.
