Mini bio

How it started.

Matt trained as a high-school maths teacher in Perth before moving to the UK. He took that classroom curiosity into public talks and comedy, and founded Think Maths to bring engaging maths talks into schools.

Finding his audience.

He helped establish Numberphile in 2011 and became a familiar face on the channel. His own Stand-up Maths videos give fans puzzles, experiments and mathematical mistakes to explore. Alongside his online work, he served as Queen Mary University of London’s Public Engagement in Mathematics Fellow from 2009 to 2019.

Maths on the bookshelf.

His first book, Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension, arrived in 2014. Humble Pi followed in 2019 and became the first maths book to reach number one on the Sunday Times list. Love Triangle, published in 2024, explores the trigonometry behind everyday life and became a New York Times bestseller.

With friends.

Matt performs with Helen Arney and Steve Mould as Festival of the Spoken Nerd. He also co-hosts A Problem Squared with Bec Hill, tackling problems submitted by listeners. Getting Triggy With It brings his mathematical experiments and comedy back to the stage.
