How it started.
Matthias was working in a group therapy practice when his short mental health videos took off on TikTok and Instagram near the beginning of the pandemic. In a 2023 interview, he recalled being the new therapist with an office under the stairs. The attention brought so many wait-list calls that the practice asked to remove him from its website.

He moved into his own practice and began making workshops with other mental health specialists. His collaborations include Healing Trauma, a podcast with psychiatrist Dr. Frank Anderson that began in March 2024, and his earlier Matthias J Barker Podcast.
Where his work is now.
As founder of Estrangement.com, he focuses on education and support for parents and adult children facing family disconnection. His official biography describes training with David Kessler in grief, Frank Anderson in Internal Family Systems, and Matthieu Villatte in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. He also says he has experienced family estrangement himself.
