Mini bio
How it started.
Mann grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts, fascinated by how the world works. After studying physics and applied math at UC Berkeley, he headed to Yale for theoretical physics. A university catalog led him to Barry Saltzman’s climate research, where he found a way to use his mathematical training on a problem with real-world consequences.
The graph that changed things.
His 1998 work helped produce the hockey-stick graph, showing a sharp recent rise in temperatures against a much longer climate history. Its prominence in an IPCC report brought him into public debate and helped turn a research career into a life of explaining and defending climate science.
Making the science accessible.
He co-founded RealClimate, a site launched in 2004 for commentary by working climate scientists. His books offer several ways into the subject: personal history in The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, satire with cartoonist Tom Toles in The Madhouse Effect, and a look at Earth’s deep past in Our Fragile Moment.
What he does now.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Mann is Presidential Distinguished Professor of Earth and Environmental Science and directs the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. His 2025 collaboration with Peter J. Hotez, Science Under Siege, connects their experiences confronting opposition to climate science and public health.

There’s urgency, but there’s agency tooMichael E. Mann, Heating Up to Expectations
Discussing his team’s 2026 research, he paired the need for rapid climate action with the message that people can still change the outcome.
Trivia
- Carl Sagan’s Cosmos helped spark his interest in science as a teenager.
- He first pursued theoretical condensed-matter and solid-state physics before switching to climate research.
- He has also written for children, collaborating with Megan Herbert on The Tantrum That Saved the World.
