Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Delhi and raised in New York, Naval grew up with a working mother and a brother. The library became a place to spend afternoons, and books became companions. After Stuyvesant High School, they studied computer science and economics at Dartmouth, graduating in 1995.
Building and sharing.
Naval co-founded Epinions in 1999. In 2007, they launched Venture Hacks with Babak Nivi to share advice for startup founders. AngelList followed in 2010. Alongside building companies, Naval became an early investor in businesses including Twitter and Uber.
Finding a wider audience.
A 2015 conversation on The Tim Ferriss Show helped introduce Naval beyond Silicon Valley. Their How to Get Rich thread later became a series of conversations with Nivi, collected into a complete audio episode in 2019. Fans could hear the reasoning behind the short posts, including ideas about ownership, specific knowledge and leverage.
Ideas you can return to.
Eric Jorgenson collected Naval’s tweets, essays and interviews in The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, with illustrations by Jack Butcher and a foreword by Tim Ferriss. The book is available free online, and Naval earns no money from the project. More recently, the podcast has explored AI, building companies and learning by doing, while Naval has spoken about working on Impossible.
