Mini bio
How it started.
Nigel grew up in Montreal and completed his biochemistry degree at McGill University in 2014. He worked as a chemistry laboratory technician before starting a chemistry master’s at McGill in January 2015. On The Yard, he recalled filming a flash-paper experiment while working in a lab, then needing a name to upload it. That became the beginning of NileRed in 2014.
Finding his audience.
Early videos gave viewers a close look at chemical reactions that are hard to see outside a laboratory. Aluminum and Mercury, released in 2017, became one of his signature experiments. His work later drew wider coverage, including a viral video of a hot dog dissolving in piranha solution in 2021. He left his master’s program to concentrate on making videos.
Following an idea through.
His projects often start with an unlikely question: can plastic gloves become hot sauce, or can he make a purple gold ring? The videos follow the attempts and setbacks as well as the finished result. Making aerogel, Making purple gold and Turning plastic gloves into hot sauce are good places to get to know this side of his work.
Beyond the main channel.
Nigel also makes videos on NileBlue. His official website describes a dedicated lab supported by family and friends. He has partnered with Vsauce and Inq Factory on a chemistry kit built around the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, bringing one of his laboratory demonstrations to fans at home.
