Mini bio
How it started.
Raised in Northampton, Pat learned to experiment with makeup through her mother, Jean. She describes herself as self-taught. Stylist Kim Bowen invited her onto shoots, giving her a way into the industry.
The turning points.
McGrath told i-D that working with singer Caron Wheeler on a Japanese tour helped her realise makeup could be her career. Her first mainstream fashion cover came in 1993 with Amber Valletta and Craig McDean for French Glamour. Valletta introduced her work to Steven Meisel; a couture shoot with him in 1996 became another turning point.
From shoots to her own formulas.
Early collaborations with Edward Enninful at i-D helped shape her editorial career. In 2015 she launched Pat McGrath Labs with Gold 001, a gold pigment introduced through her social channels. She became British Vogue’s beauty editor-at-large in 2017.

For Maison Margiela’s Spring 2024 Artisanal show, her team paired fine brows, painted eyes and flushed cheeks with a reflective skin glaze. In 2025 she brought that effect into Glass 001 and led the debut of La Beauté Louis Vuitton, extending a long backstage relationship with the house.
