Mini bio
How it started.
Originally from Bristol, Val trained as a hair colourist in Sydney. A fascination with colour carried over into makeup. In the On Point podcast, Val described an early makeup job that came about when the booked artist did not turn up.
Finding a place in fashion.
Val returned to London in 1994 and built a career across runway shows and editorial shoots. Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood became collaborators, alongside photographers including Nick Knight and Tim Walker. Magazine work has appeared in Vogue, Dazed and Harper’s Bazaar.
Faces fans recognise.
Work with Lady Gaga brought Val’s makeup into pop imagery. Looking back in The Standard, Val singled out Alejandro’s dewy skin, red mouth and bleached brows, as well as the liner experiments of the Born This Way era.
Sharing the craft.
In 2017, Val became L’Oréal Paris’s first Global Make-up Director. The 2018 book Validated gathers editorial photographs and backstage stories from the career. In 2019, Val joined Glow Up as a judge, bringing that experience to a new generation of makeup artists.
