Mini bio
How it started.
Raf grew up in Belgium and graduated in industrial design in 1991. Furniture came before fashion. After an internship with Walter Van Beirendonck and encouragement from Antwerp fashion educator Linda Loppa, Raf taught themself menswear design and launched a label in 1995.
Finding a voice.
The early collections brought youth culture and classic tailoring together. Music, art, images and words helped build a world around the clothes, with individuality at its center. That approach carried into collaborations such as the Fall 2014 collection created with artist Sterling Ruby.
Across fashion houses.
Raf led Jil Sander from 2005 to 2012, then Dior womenswear from 2012 to 2015, and Calvin Klein from 2016 to 2018. The first Dior couture collection revisited the Bar suit. At Calvin Klein, Raf won both major design categories at the 2017 CFDA Awards and the womenswear award again in 2018.
What comes next.
In April 2020, Raf joined Prada as co-creative director, sharing creative responsibility with Miuccia Prada. Alongside fashion, the Kvadrat partnership, begun in 2014, brings color and texture into the home through textiles and accessories.
