Mini bio
How it started.
Reshma grew up in Illinois, the daughter of Indian refugees from Uganda. After studying at the University of Illinois, Harvard Kennedy School, and Yale Law School, she began working as an attorney and political organizer.
A campaign that changed her direction.
During her 2010 run for Congress, visits to local schools showed her how few girls were in computing classes. That experience led her to found Girls Who Code in 2012, creating a way for girls and young women to learn computing skills.
Bravery reaches a wider audience.
Her 2016 TED talk, “Teach girls bravery, not perfection,” brought her message about taking risks to a wider audience. She developed that idea in the 2019 book Brave, Not Perfect, then turned to the barriers facing working women in Pay Up in 2022.
Making room for mothers.
In January 2021, she launched Marshall Plan for Moms, now Moms First, in response to the pandemic’s impact on mothers. The organization campaigns for affordable childcare and paid leave. Her podcast My So-Called Midlife began in 2024; in 2026, she was an executive producer of No Country for Mothers, bringing her advocacy into documentary filmmaking.
