Mini bio

How it started.

Richard worked in local radio before moving into motoring television on Men & Motors. Motoring journalist Zog Ziegler, a guest on his Radio Lancashire programme, encouraged the move. In a 2026 interview, Richard said he still had a cassette of his first live radio show from 1988.

The breakthrough.

Joining the revived Top Gear in 2002 brought Richard to a much wider audience. His years with Jeremy Clarkson and James May led to The Grand Tour, which launched on Prime Video in 2016. Their final adventure together, One For The Road, arrived in September 2024.

More than motoring.

Richard also presented science and entertainment programmes including Brainiac: Science Abuse and Blast Lab. His 2007 memoir On The Edge tells his life story and, with contributions from Mindy Hammond, recounts the crash during Top Gear filming and his recovery.

Building something of his own.

Richard co-founded DriveTribe in 2016 and founded production company Chimp in 2018. The Smallest Cog, established in 2021, gave his love of classic cars a working home and became the subject of Richard Hammond’s Workshop. His current videos bring fans along for reviews, builds and conversations, often with daughter Izzy.
