Mini bio

How it started.

Before his videos reached a worldwide audience, Barron’s homilies aired on Chicago’s WGN radio. Putting those recordings online let listeners hear them beyond the early Sunday broadcast. Word on Fire’s website launched in 2001.

From movie reviews to documentaries.

He launched his YouTube channel in 2007 with a review of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. In 2011, the ten-part CATHOLICISM series brought his teaching to public television, using travel, art, and architecture to explore the faith.

A teacher and a bishop.

Ordained in Chicago in 1986, Barron joined Mundelein Seminary’s faculty in 1992 and served as its rector from 2012 to 2015. He became an auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles in 2015 and was appointed bishop of Winona-Rochester in 2022.

What fans follow.

His work ranges from Sunday sermons and books to conversations about faith and culture. This Is My Body has sold over a million copies. His 2026 documentary Heaven in Stone and Glass takes that interest in beauty inside France’s Gothic cathedrals.
